How to Style a Candle on Your Coffee Table

A coffee table works best when it reads as one composition rather than a collection of objects. Start with a tray — it draws a boundary and gives everything permission to sit close together.

Work in odd numbers and vary height: a tall pillar, a low vessel, and something sculptural with no function at all. Leave one third of the tray empty. That emptiness is what makes the grouping feel intentional.

Finally, consider the light. A candle is at its best when it is the warmest thing in the room, so place it away from a lamp and let it do its own work in the evening.
